Nationals manager Dave Martinez not in dugout following foot procedure

Many were puzzled not to see Washington Nationals manager Dave Martinez in the dugout for Thursday’s makeup game against the Philadelphia Phillies. He had good reason, as the skipper had a minor foot procedure earlier in the morning.

The procedure was described as minor. The Nationals and Phillies were expected to be off today. However, Wednesday’s series finale was postponed as reminants of Hurricane Ida crashed through the northeast.

Martinez was able to arrive to Nationals Park in time for the game. But, elected to watch the game from his office rather than the dugout, according to Maria Torres of The Athletic. Bench coach Tim Bogar, who recently came out of COVID-19 protocols managed the game in Martinez’s place.

Martinez for once may get to kick his feet up and watch his team play from a distance.

Washington is headed for a rebuild after trading away a great deal of their star players such as Max Scherzer and Trea Turner. The Nationals, who have a record of 55-75, are currently taking an extensive look at some of their young players, as they prepare for the future.

They’ll next play a five-game set at home against the New York Mets over the weekend. That includes a doubleheader Saturday to make up for a previously postponed game.
