Three reasons the Cowboys should extend Dak Prescott now

Dak Prescott had his best statistical season as a Cowboy last season, accounting for 36 passing touchdowns and 4,516 yards. The question of when and if Dallas will extend the former Pro Bowler or let him hit free agency next offseason lingers.

Here are three reasons the Cowboys should extend the veteran quarterback now.

The QB market is hot

This offseason has already seen 35-year-old Kirk Cousins sign a four-year, $180M deal with the Falcons and Jared Goff re-sign with Detroit on a $212M deal. The Cowboys continue to lose leverage in contract negotiations as more and more QBs sign big-money deals.

It would be in Dallas' favor to get pen to paper with Prescott before the likes of Trevor Lawrence or Jordan Love heighten the price in the QB market.

Dallas has limited options

Despite trading for former third overall pick Trey Lance last offseason, the Cowboys are still at square one when finding a legitimate replacement for Prescott.

Next year's NFL Draft class does not yield many more options as it is currently considered one of the weaker QB draft classes. Dallas should sign Prescott before next offseason when he can test free agency and possibly depart from "America's Team."

Prescott is still in his prime

Prescott put on an MVP-caliber performance last season, leading the league in passing touchdowns. He gives the team the best chance to win a Super Bowl, and the Cowboys will have to pony up the money necessary to keep the elite signal caller in Dallas before another team does.

Not signing Prescott to a deal now could lead to frustration and push the two-time Pro Bowler out of Jerry's World.
